What is a Business Application in AppDynamics?
A Business Application is the top-level container in AppDynamics' monitoring hierarchy — it represents an entire application end to end, made up of all the tiers (and their nodes) that participate in serving it, such as a web tier, an API tier, and a payments tier grouped under one e-commerce application.
Everything else is scoped underneath it: Business Transactions, health rules, dashboards, and the flow map are all viewed within the context of a specific Business Application, and license consumption and default configuration limits (like the number of custom match rules) are also tracked per business application.
A single Controller can host many business applications side by side, which is how a platform team monitors dozens of independent services from one Controller instance while keeping each team's view scoped to just their own application.
