API / Venafi Interview questions
What is the difference between Certificate Manager SaaS and Certificate Manager Self-Hosted?
Both editions cover the same core job — discover, issue, renew, revoke — but they differ in who runs the infrastructure and how deeply they can reach into a network.
| Certificate Manager SaaS | Certificate Manager Self-Hosted (TPP) |
| Hosted and operated by CyberArk | Deployed and operated by the customer, on-prem or in their own cloud account |
| Uses "zones" for policy | Uses a hierarchical "policy folder" tree |
| Fast to start, minimal infrastructure | More setup, but full control over data residency and network placement |
| Reaches internal endpoints via lightweight connectors | Native, deep orchestration into on-prem appliances (F5, NetScaler, IIS) |
The practical decision usually comes down to two things: how much of the estate is cloud-native versus legacy on-prem hardware, and whether regulatory or data-residency requirements demand that certificate metadata never leave the customer's own environment.
