Why do enterprises replace manual spreadsheets with Venafi?

A spreadsheet can list certificates someone remembered to type in; it can't see certificates that were issued outside the formal process, and it has no way of knowing when a listed certificate was actually replaced, revoked, or moved to a different server.

Venafi's discovery scanning finds certificates the spreadsheet never captured — ones issued directly by a cloud provider's console, a developer's self-signed test cert left running in production, or an appliance's factory-default certificate nobody rotated. That's usually the moment a security team learns their real certificate count is several times what the spreadsheet said.

Beyond visibility, a spreadsheet also can't act. It doesn't renew anything, doesn't enforce that a new certificate uses an approved key length, and doesn't alert anyone until a human happens to open the file and notice a date is close. Venafi replaces that passive record with an active system that discovers, tracks, and remediates continuously.
