What is a Health Rule?
A Health Rule is a condition AppDynamics continuously evaluates against live metrics — for example, "average response time exceeds 3 standard deviations above baseline for 5 minutes" — that puts a Business Transaction, tier, or node into a Warning or Critical health state when it's violated.
AppDynamics ships default health rules out of the box for common concerns like slow response time, high error rate, and stalled requests, and teams add custom health rules for anything specific to their own SLAs, such as a rule scoped to one critical Business Transaction with a tighter threshold than the default.
Health rules by themselves only change color-coded status on the flow map and dashboards; to actually notify someone or trigger automation, a health rule violation has to be attached to a Policy.
