What is a Node in AppDynamics?

A Node is the smallest unit AppDynamics monitors: a single instance of an application process with an agent attached to it, such as one JVM, one .NET worker process, or one Node.js process.

Each node gets a unique name in the Controller, often following an <app_server_type>@<hostname>:<port> pattern out of the box, so that if the same host runs multiple app server instances on different ports, each still shows up as a distinct node rather than being merged together.

Nodes roll up into tiers, and tiers roll up into a business application, which gives AppDynamics its three-level hierarchy: Node → Tier → Application. When you scale out by adding more instances behind a load balancer, you're adding nodes to an existing tier, not creating new tiers.
