AI / Apache Paimon Interview questions
Why did Apache Paimon originally start as part of the Flink project, and what is it called now?
Paimon began life inside the Flink community as FLIP-188, "Introduce Built-in Dynamic Table Storage," shipping as Flink Table Store. The motivation was specifically to give Flink's streaming SQL a native storage layer that could hold large, continuously updated tables efficiently — something existing Flink connectors to external systems weren't purpose-built for.
As the project matured, its usefulness clearly extended well beyond Flink alone: Spark, Hive, Trino, and other engines all wanted to read and write the same tables, which didn't fit neatly under Flink's own governance. It entered the Apache Incubator as an independent project and, unlike some incubating projects, graduated relatively quickly to become a Top-Level Apache Software Foundation project, Apache Paimon, in April 2024.
Today it's governed by its own Project Management Committee rather than as a Flink subcomponent, though its deep integration with Flink (and now increasingly Spark) remains a defining feature reflecting those origins.
