What are Directives in GraphQL?

In GraphQL, directives are annotations prefixed with the @ symbol that provide instructions to the GraphQL engine on how to handle specific parts of a schema or operation. They act as "syntax sugar" or metadata that can modify runtime behavior, execution logic, or type validation.

Categories of Directives:

Directives are categorized based on where they are used:

  • Executable Directives (Query Directives): Used by clients within operations (queries, mutations, or subscriptions) to conditionally change the result of a query.
  • Type System Directives (Schema Directives): Used by developers within the GraphQL Schema Definition Language (SDL) to annotate types, fields, or arguments for server-side behavior like authorization or data fetching.
