Eclipse is a very active open source community with over 60 open source projects, but it is mostly known because of its IDE environment for Java. One of the key benefits of Eclipse's IDE environment is the ability for customized plugins to be integrated into the IDE, allowing for a very customizable development experience.

Several major companies (such as IBM) and universities help support the Eclipse platform.
